DDoS attacks are “Distributed Denial of Service attacks” and are often made by a so-called DDoS program. This is becoming an increasingly more common way for cybercriminals to disrupt some kind of digitally dependent service.
How do DDoS attacks work?
The DDoS attack itself is made through sending SYN messages to a specific IP address and/or flooding the server with basically nonsense requests. This makes it impossible for the server to receive and send the information it needs to uphold normal operation for the company’s customers.
Who is vulnerable to the DDoS attack?
If you provide any kind of service that is held for your company’s customers, you have got a problem that will only escalate with time. For example, a DDoS attack on an eCommerce website is dependent on being constantly operational, functional, and accessible. It could also be a company offering SaaS on a centralized platform online. The list goes on.
Why would someone attempt to perform DDoS attacks?
The attacks can sometimes even be made on a very cynical level since it is not uncommon that the attack is also followed by a blackmail request asking for money to stop the DDoS attack.
These can also be a diversion tactic. If you make a lot of noise over here, they can do or steal what they actually need over there.
What can be done to prevent attacks by DDoS?
Internet service providers (ISP) today are noticing this and taking effective measures to mitigate it. ISPs are nowadays offering additional services to their customers that effectively deflect an attack via custom hardware. That is an efficient tool against this type of attack.
Importantly, this is not the only type of attack which exposes your company and puts IT security at risk. Syspeace protects you against the most persistent type of attack today, brute force attacks.
